The former Vice President of the Government María Teresa Fernández de la Vega in the Executive of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will resign next week from the presidency of the Council of State, according to sources from the highest advisory body of the Government of Spain to La Vanguardia.

De la Vega, who was already a permanent member and counselor of the Council of State since 2010, replaced José Manuel Romay Beccaría at the head of the body in 2018, and now, once he left office, he would intend to return to his post. for life as counselor of the seventh section of the Council, according to the sources consulted.

De la Vega was the first woman to obtain a permanent position in the historic institution. As president, the advisory body defended the state of alarm approved by the Government of Pedro Sánchez to stop the pandemic, and which was later overturned by the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, he defended that it was a constitutional and necessary measure. It argued that “the system of eventual restriction of the right that the draft norm establishes conforms to the requirements of the constitutional jurisprudence, as it is oriented towards the protection of the physical integrity and health of the people, configuring, in addition, as a measure necessary to achieve the purpose pursued by the rule, which is none other than to prevent the spread of a serious contagious disease.
