Feijóo meets with Von der Leyen on the eve of the European PP summit

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, held a "cordial and productive meeting" this Wednesday with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in which they "analyzed the economic situation in Spain and Europe, with special attention to inflation, the energy crisis and European funds".

Feijóo, traveling to Brussels to attend the Statutory Summit of the European People's Party held on Thursday prior to the European Council, has met with Von der Leyen, who belongs to the same political family, in the Berlaymont building, headquarters of the Commission European.

The Galician's agenda also includes contacts with other popular European figures such as the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the recently appointed Italian foreign minister, Antonio Tajani.

The EPP summit will also be attended by some of the leaders who will later participate in the European Council, including the prime ministers of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic.

The European summit will be marked by Von der Leyen's latest proposals to intervene in the energy market in the face of high gas and electricity prices, including a temporary mechanism to cap the price of gas purchases as they have requested fifteen countries, including Spain.

The appointment has taken place only one day after the face to face that Feijóo had yesterday with the head of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, in the Senate and in which the socialist leader boasted that Von der Leyen had advocated for measures oriented in the same line than those being taken by the Government in Spain.

Specifically, he referred to the reform of the electricity market and to the fact that the price of gas cannot condition the evolution of the price of electricity. He has also opted for joint gas purchases and capping the price of gas that Europe imports and has defended the Iberian solution as a possible European solution. "It would be desirable that those who spoke of the Iberian scam rectify it," Sánchez snapped at Feijóo.

Feijóo, who has led the PP since April 1, met Von der Leyen at the congress that the EPP held in Rotterdam (Netherlands) last May, where the German Manfred Weber was elected as the new president of the formation, replacing of the Polish Donald Tusk.

There, they maintained a bilateral of more than half an hour. And both have been seen later in the latest meetings of the European People's Party. In addition, the president of the European Commission participated by videoconference in the Interparliamentary that the PP held on June 17 in Toledo.

Von der Leyen referred to Feijóo as his "dear friend Alberto". "It is good to know that in such a difficult situation we have such experienced and far-sighted leaders in our ranks," said the president of the European Commission at the time.
