Techstars selects Orlando tech firm Abe.ai

An Orlando-based financial tech company has landed at a prestigious accelerator program backed by one of the world’s largest banks.

Abe.ai, which has been designing artificial intelligence-based products for the banking industry, was one of 10 companies accepted into TechStars Cape Town. That South Africa program has the backing of London-based Barclays.

In a blog post announcing the company’s acceptance, company officials said Abe.ai has been conducting pilot program tests with multiple banks in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Abe is a finance-based “chatbot” that can answer consumers’ questions or provide them with information about their accounts.

According to its website, it can monitor income and keep track of expenses, as well.

The company has 16 full-time employees, including veterans from Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson and Disney.

In the blog post, cofounder and CEO Rob Guilfoyle called the program “an incredible opportunity,” giving the company a chance to “solve global banking problems with artificial intelligence, streamlining operations and boosting (return on investment) for the world’s leading financial service institutions.”

Roughly half of the Abe team will head to South Africa to begin the 12-week program on May 9, said Orrett Davis, the former head of the Orlando Tech Association now serving as Abe’s head of growth.

Abe was one of two U.S.-based companies to land in the program, which will welcome its second class.
